We feel everything from the inside... embodiment is the only instrument we have to play the music of our existence.
— Jane Hirshfield
Like many threshold experiences, the postpartum period is marked by heightened contrasts: one body becomes two, exhilaration is matched by exhaustion, and the divine walks hand-in-hand with the banal. Everything is new and somehow instinctually known, and the passage of time bewilders as it simultaneously slows and accelerates. We are in love and we are terrified.
This gentle movement-based workshop aims to support new mamas/ caregivers to embrace and (gracefully) manage the dynamic postpartum period from the inside out. Integrating guided somatic exercises with practical and postural skill building, we will cultivate supple strength, creativity, and embodied confidence to release stress and restore wellbeing. Offerings draw from the following somatic practices: contemplative and developmental movement (Feldenkrais, Body-Mind Centering), Pilates, Qigong, breathwork, and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction.
Participants will leave the workshop with a series of accessible movement practices they can integrate into new motherhood routines.
The workshop will include the following:
An opening practice focused on grounding and breath (both are great to use while nursing)
A series of guided movement and experiential explorations focusing on body alignment and stability
A time for writing/drawing and reflection
A closing practice and opportunity to share
